Common questions

Where do I find my appliance’s wattage?
Look for a rating label on the back or underside of the device, or on the power brick. It will list watts (W) directly, or volts and amps which you multiply together to get watts. If only a range is given, use the higher number for a worst-case estimate.
Does the wattage on the label mean it always draws that much?
No, and this is the biggest source of error. A label shows maximum draw. Anything thermostat-controlled cycles on and off, so a 1500 W space heater or a fridge may only run a fraction of each hour once up to temperature. For those, estimate the hours it is actively running rather than the hours it is switched on.
Do appliances use electricity when switched off?
Many do. Devices with a remote, a clock, a standby light or a permanent network connection typically draw between 0.5 and 3 watts continuously. Individually that is pennies, but a house with thirty such devices can lose a meaningful amount each year. To check one, enter its standby wattage with 24 hours per day.
